It’s a great night to be a Minnesota sports fan.

Minnesota Twins vs. Los Angeles Angels: The Twins are looking to extend their AL Central lead to 5.5 games tonight after the White Sox lost to the Royals in 10 innings this afternoon. Starting pitcher Scott Baker will be looking to pick up a much-needed win in order to end the Twins nine-game homestand on a high note. It’ll be a challenge, as his starting counterpart will be the always-tough Jered Weaver.

Minnesota Vikings vs. San Francisco 49ers: While one team from California is playing in Minnesota, another Minnesota team is playing in California. Brett Favre will start at QB today in what is surely the most hyped pre-season game of the year, with any team. We’ll see if the Purple Pride magic from last year will carry over into the upcoming season. This one might not be too interesting after the first and second-stringers are done playing, so you may want to flip over to the Twins once the scrubs come in.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some games to watch.

Usually I don’t like posting/listening to snippets, especially tagged up snippets, but this song right here?!? This is music. Haven’t been this excited to hear a CD version of a song since I saw Lupe Fiasco perform “State Crime Radio” at Gustavus in April. G.O.O.D. music.

I got up early this morning, excited to head down to get tickets for tonight’s “Student ID Night” at Target Field. A vaild college ID gets you a grandstand seat for $9, which is a heck of a deal at a stadium that charges nearly that much for a beer. When I got there, I caught a glimpse of the field where the Twins will take on the White Sox tonight in the second game of a crucial series that has major implications on who the frontrunner to win this year’s AL Central will be. I was jacked.

We walked into the entrance at exactly 9 a.m., right when the ticket offices opened, and there was a line of about 150-200 people moving at a steady pace.

About 5 minutes later, I’m 5-6 people away from snagging a couple of game tickets when I hear the booth teller in my line telling people they’re out of student night tickets. He politely informed those in line that they could still get the best available seats, but they’d have to give up more cash.

What!?!

At that point, there were about 100 REALLY pissed off people, myself included. How could they have run out of tickets so quickly? How many do they even put aside to sell on these so-called “student nights”?

This is the second time this has happened to me. It’s ridiculous.

While the Metrodome was one of the worst baseball facilities in the MLB, it hosted 10-15 Wednesday night “Student ID” games (I’m guessing) each year, where tickets cost $4 and Dome Dogs cost a buck. It was an affordable way to invite college students – who, may I remind you, are very broke – to the games, and it worked. But at the new-and-improved, outdoor Target Field, Wednesday night games aren’t as common as Wednesday afternoon games, which means that “Student ID Nights” are becoming a rarity. As a result, every college student and their friends wants to get a ticket when this lunar eclipse-like “Student ID Night” comes around. That means that even though I showed up early, I can’t seem to get into a game for less than $25-$30.

As a college student, I think in terms of budgeting. Budgeting that $30 ticket into my week means I’d have to fast for the next few days and ride my bike to work, because there goes my gas money.

Hey, Target Field execs: There has to be a better system, a better way to be able to set aside more tickets for “Student ID Night.” I know you guys already have enough people coming to the games, but, on behalf of the metro area college student body, it means the world to us to be able to buy a cheap ticket and watch the Twins play, even if it’s only once a month. Some of us can’t afford to buy a seat at $30 a pop, and no, we don’t want to buy your standing-room-only tickets. We want to sit and watch the game like everyone else.

It’s important for you guys to make sure everyone can get to a game, even if it’s broke college kids filling up the stadium once a month.

So, I was left to walk away with my student ID card, wallet and disappointment, bellowing out one of Chris Berman’s favorite catch phrases:

“Target Field: C’mon man!”

The Star Tribune reported Tuesday afternoon that Brett Favre is on a plane back to the Twin Cities en route to rejoining the Minnesota Vikings. Favre is scheduled to make $13 million this year, one year after he had the most successful season of his career. He also sustained a potential career-ending ankle injury that led him into near-retirement, and forced him to have arthroscopic surgery in May for the third time in his career.

The 40-year-old QB threw for 4,202 yards and 33 touchdowns while only throwing seven interceptions and maintaining a passer rating of 107.2. Favre, who turns 41 in October, will hopefully look to build off of last year’s success by leading the Minnesota Vikings, who’s stock must be rising by the minute, to the team’s first Super Bowl appearance since 1977.

It’s an exciting time to be a Minnesota Vikings fan.

Jon Chhay - The Next Golf Genius

Yesterday, one of my buddies was attending MN Vikings training camp in Mankato when he came across the KFAN Sports Radio guys doing a few on-air segments outside camp. Jon Chhay walked up to the guys and started pestering them with golf questions. Because it had started raining, they decided to kill some time and put Chhay on the air for a few minutes. The Twins-Sox game is 10-5 in the bottom of the 7th right now, so I’m assuming this one’s in the bag. One down, three to go. Tonight’s (soon-to-be) win gives the Twinkies a one-game lead in the AL Central race. Let’s go Twins!

Bun B’s new album, Trill O.G., received the coveted 5-out-of-5 microphone album rating from The Source Magazine last Wednesday. Only a select few albums have received 5-mics from The Source, including Nas’ Illmatic, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint and Lil Kim’s The Naked Truth (I know, right?). I don’t think this is a five-star album, but it’s definitely a good one - in the conversation for album of the year.
